Ed Travis

One of the things I like to say when I talk to people about Community First! is, kind of, what it means.

The idea is that one of the major causes of homelessness might be, stereotypically, something like, uh, drug use or mental illness or those kinds of things. That’s not necessarily always the case. It’s more so often that it’s a, uh, loss of family and a loss of community.

Out here, you come out and you have a new home, uh, a place to call home, a place to live for the rest of your life if you’d like to stay here. But also we’re trying to restore community back into your life.

Todd Janssen

We’ve been involved in many years, uh, to assist Alan Graham and his team in preparing this community for the homeless. So, we’re here today, uh, with the combined Stantec Offices across Austin to serve this community in a variety of projects. So we have had two shifts, a morning and an afternoon shift, and uh, hopefully we’re making a big difference.

Ed Travis

So out in the Genesis Gardens area I know that you did some weeding. I know you took apart an old planter that we’re going to make space for to plant trees. Um, I know that there was some help in the Community Market with preparing the shelving and the signage for that. Anything we have out here, you guys helped with today!

Todd Janssen

I think that, uh, giving back is important to who we are as human beings, and it is to me personally. So anytime that we can marry up our work with, uh, serving in the community, I think you’ve got a homerun.
