I started working here in 2008, but I was also paddling quite a bit still, And I really wanted to keep both of those sections of my life together. I wanted to keep training and do the engineering thing as well.

Stantec support has really helped me just as far as knowing that I have nothing else that I need to do except race and train, and to have a bit more of a flexible work schedule, to still make my way in my career, but also to be able to explore this other passion, and really take my kayaking to the next level.

As athletes, we can really get caught up in going down this one path and get obsessed about it and really identify as only being an athlete. That's how people see us, and that's how we get recognized.

Having a career outside of sport is what gives me my balance, among other things as well. I just really think it's important to not just be one-dimensional in your life no matter what you're doing.

A lot of athletes don't have jobs, and it's a source of stress for a lot of people, not for me, because I can confidently sit on the line knowing that when I'm in my boat racing, that that's the one thing that I have to worry about. I don't have to think about the future and wonder what if, what if, what if. I can just think about the next stroke I have to take.
