Carthage College sits on the windswept western shores of Lake Michigan in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Like the waves, its campus has an ebb and flow as students move through in a steady stream. But at one place, a crossroads, they avoided an aging and vacant 1970s building. By transforming this legacy into a dynamic student union, we created a place where students can now go and find more than they ever expected.

The new Campbell Student Union (Stu) opened for business and fun in 2011 and has been enhancing student life on campus ever since.

More energy saved

The building’s annual energy savings per year is 30.9% better than the State of Wisconsin baseline.

Stu's total area

The gross square footage at the Stu encompasses two levels and 15 primary spaces and is equivalent to 5,203 square metres.

At Carthage College, there’s a natural crossroads where the residence halls meet the athletic fields.

This site had the potential to change how students move through and experience their college. Our team helped realize this potential through our design of the Campbell student union.

The building’s social spaces face the main campus drive and residence halls. Students walking by stop to see what’s going on and hang out. They also now have an awesome place to cheer on their athletes and enjoy the game as the building is right next to the stadium and offers direct views of the fields.

This new heart of campus has changed the way students go about their day and has helped strengthen their connections to each other and the rest of campus.

Go with the flow

The use of the building changes throughout the day as students come and go. We designed the space to stay animated 24/7 in support of this flow. For example, the direct view of the athletic fields from the campus bookstore and the view between the dining area and the residential district keep students connected to the activities on campus, as well as their home base.

A 200-seat theatre with state-of-the-art surround sound hosts first-run movies, performances, and student presentations at various times of the day and night. During slow times, aircraft hangar-style overhead doors with red resin panels allow for a sequential shutdown of retail venues. The Main Street corridor creates a streetscape of retail venues next to the main seating area where students can meet, shop, see, and be seen on their schedule.

Our design has reinvigorated the game day experience. New 1,400-person bleachers, a press box, the popular Jockey Terrace, and inviting skyboxes take advantage of adjacencies to the field and help create a connection to the athletic program.
