How can we help keep the largest CPV solar farm in the world up and running?

The idea was to design, build, and operate the world’s largest concentrated photovoltaic, or CPV, solar plant right here in the Colorado desert. But it had never been done before. So Cogentrix Energy called us. Faced with unique conditions, we designed systems that carry the sun’s energy to Colorado’s power grid and ultimately supported our client’s vision.

Football fields

The Alamosa project site covers 225 acres in the San Luis Valley, which is about the size of 250 football fields.

Miles of cables

We figured out a way to connect each of the 500 trackers on the plant back to the grid using just over 72 miles (116 km) of collection system cables.

Homes powered up

The solar plant produces up to 30 megawatts of electricity. That’s enough energy to power more than 6,500 Colorado homes.

Build a big case for it

The Alamosa project was big. And it was the first of its kind. Add to that a technology untested at utility-scale generation and the whole project made for one big financial risk.

To help prove that this solar plant was investment worthy, Cogentrix Energy looked to our team for help. We created a detailed engineering plan

that demonstrated—from the site design, to the foundational stability of each solar tracker, to the electrical collection system and controls—how the proposed network of over 500 CPV trackers would work together across a 225-acre site. With this design, our client was able to get the project constructed and up and running.

The 72 miles (116 km) of grounding and collection system cables used in our electrical design had to be fortified and buried deep enough to avoid the nibbling jaws of burrowing critters.

where we helped, why we're proud

“We truly are better together. Along with Cogentrix, our team worked hard to make this first-of-its-kind project work.”

Rick Poulin, Senior Principal

“With Stantec’s help, we were able to deliver a very unique project that met the expectations of our customer.”
