Faced with an undersized emergency department, Rouge Valley Health System needed a solution for their campus in Ajax, Ontario. The challenge was adding significant new program space and a complex, staged renovation — all while maintaining full hospital operations. The design had to anticipate future flexibility, expansion opportunities and maintain a cohesive architectural expression.
Almost 25 percent of the existing hospital was renovated and 33 percent of new construction was added. New and expanded programs include ambulatory care, emergency, diagnostic imaging, cardiac diagnostics, laboratory services, complex continuing care, inpatient and outpatient mental health, and public and staff facilities.
We used extensive transparency in the entry zones to improve patient and visitor orientation and establish a welcoming environment. Courtyards adjacent to entries have several functions: guiding visitors; enhancing way finding; providing supportive space for patients, visitors and staff; and maximizing daylight and views.
By modernizing their hospital, Rouge Valley Health System has made healthcare in their community more accessible and receptive.
