Kitimat LNG Export Terminal

A gateway for natural gas from northeastern British Columbia to overseas markets

Kitimat-Stikine, British Columbia

We have provided coordination, management and engineering analysis for the geotechnical aspects of the LNG facility for the front end engineering design phase of the project. In other words, we’re helping to identify the basic scope of the facility and determine an appropriate site layout.

The land-based portion of the LNG terminal will cover 40 hectares in steep and mountainous terrain, requiring significant re-grading to provide level areas to build storage tanks, process facilities and administration buildings. The offshore facilities include an offload jetty for the LNG Tankers, a construction wharf and a temporary conveyor system to off load aggregate from the site.

A key consideration for the proposed layout is to locate the LNG tanks on competent bedrock or soil so the tanks would not be at risk in an earthquake. Work included an extensive subsurface investigation, seismic modeling, rock stability and slope stability assessments. We’ve provided foundations recommendations for two proposed 80-metre diameter storage tanks and supporting infrastructure. Several geohazard assessments were completed for the access road and utility corridors being designed from Kitimat to the site.
