The Nabiye Project is an Imperial Oil in situ oil sands project near Cold Lake, Alberta. The development will use cyclic steam stimulation for the extraction of bitumen. Nu Nennè-Stantec, our Aboriginal Partnership with Cold Lake First Nation, was contracted in 2008 to work on project amendments: modifications to the well pad configuration to reduce surface footprint and plant design to improve energy efficiency. We were also asked to prepare Pre-Disturbance Assessments and Conservation & Reclamation Plans for the first phase of the project.
A comprehensive field program and tight timelines meant we needed a specialized team to get the job done. Our field force of 100 put in 35,000 hours with zero lost time incidents over the year of field work. Imperial Oil were pleased that we met or exceeded their high safety standards.
The number of regulatory submissions in support of project approval was another challenge. A team of 30 prepared a total of 40 submissions. Our meticulous work and attention to detail paid off - the amendment application was approved in 2010. The project is now in the development phase.
