Hospital for Sick Children - Haematology / Oncology Renovation

More than just butterflies on these clinic walls

Toronto, Ontario

Hindered by cramped, outdated and inefficient space, Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children needed a new and expanded location for their Haematology / Oncology department. The department treats children between the ages of 2 to 18 and has over 22,000 patient visits per year.

Our objective: create a welcoming, comfortable and uplifting environment that improves clinical efficiency. Guiding our work was a former patient’s poignant statement, “Please give us something more to think about than just putting butterflies on the walls of the clinic”.

We incorporated natural light, spatial variety, and positive distractions in the waiting area, including patient artwork, an interactive game center, and playfully shaped furniture. For teenagers, the design provides a separate den with audio visual equipment, Internet access, and quiet places for reading or homework. A resource center allows parents to research the issues affecting their child's health.

Finally, exam, assessment and staff charting area clusters are arranged in four pods, each expressed in a vibrant color. The pods are named after their color instead of the illness treated to ease stress and promote wayfinding.
