Falling Weight Deflectometer Testing, Alberta Provincial Highway Network

Road test

From 2012 through 2015, the Alberta Provincial Highway Network needed network-wide pavement deflection testing for two of the four regions in the province. The testing was needed for defined projects, network-level projects, and roadban decisions.

We worked in the South region, Peace region, and portions of the Central region and North Central region. With an experienced team, we completed all the Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) testing. Each year, over 25,000 FWD tests are collected on highways across the South and Peace regions.

Using the collected data, Alberta Transportation enforces roadbans during the spring thaw. Minimizing damage and ensuring longer lasting pavements. The network level data also helps select road candidates for rehabilitation design, improving the highway network.
