The application of digital delivery and how it has benefitted the design and construction of the new THP

Minworth is Severn Trent’s (STW) largest sewage treatment works serving a population equivalent of 2.5 million people from the city of Birmingham in the UK. As STW’s largest renewable energy site, with 8 MW CHP capacity and Gas-to-Grid facility, the Minworth Thermal Hydrolysis Project (THP) will enhance the plant’s renewable energy capacity and produce enhanced status sludge cake.

Utilizing Cambi technology with three streams each feeding four existing digesters, our team is designing and building the plant with capacity to process 250 tons of dry solids per day. Expected benefits include better odour control, improved biogas yields and much better dewatering, which will reduce cake quantity.

One of the project objectives was to achieve 70% off-site construction. We have exceeded this target and the key process units have embraced the design for manufacture and assembly (DfMA) ethos. The Cambi process units were fabricated in Congleton and delivered in modules, which were assembled by an experienced team that was able to reduce the schedule and complete the job safely. The steam boiler plant was also fully assembled in the factory in Rochdale, including all control panels and ancillaries, and installed in just four days.

Much of the process equipment was manufactured in the UK, which has provided valuable employment and long-term service contracts for Tier 2 suppliers.
