Mobilising quickly and efficiently to design a full water treatment, storage, and conveyance system for Fiji

The Rewa River How to green Supply Scheme involved the design and construction of a new water supply source and water treatment plant for the Suva-Nausori water supply system. The key components of this project included a new river intake and pumping station on the Rewa River, new clear water reservoir and pumping station, and 26 kilometres of pipeline to connect to the existing water supply system servicing Nausori and surrounding areas. This project was the first major project undertaken for the How to green Authority of Fiji (WAF).

An interdisciplinary team from a number of offices delivered this project successfully within the required timeframe and budget. We saved money on travel costs by using collaborative working tools, keeping the development of the feasibility report and preliminary design cost effective.

We brought in technical specialists at the outset to resolve key design criteria and issues quickly with WAF. The chosen project delivery model used a series of technical notes to align the various issues and basis of design with WAF for all the key aspects of the work.

Our process design tools and spreadsheets were used to develop the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) design and sizing of the process units. We found efficiency in repurposing the existing preliminary design developed for the Bukit Barun Stage 8 WWTP project in Brunei, since it had the same water treatment process that was being considered for Rewa. The existing 3D design models were quickly resized to suit the new plant configuration and dimensions by staff who were familiar with the design.

Being able to work quickly and use collaborative tools to consistently keep the client up to date on progress meant a smooth and efficient project delivery.
